The holidays feel so much calmer when the planning happens before December, not during it. This simple week-by-week Christmas planning checklist breaks the season into small, doable steps – and you can grab our free printable Christmas gift list to get started today.
Why plan Christmas early?
Most holiday stress comes from doing everything at once: shopping, cooking, cards, decorating and travel all land in the same few weeks. Spreading the work out gives you time to compare gift prices, stick to a budget and actually enjoy the season.
Late October: set your plan
- Write your gift list. List everyone you're buying for, a gift idea for each and a budget per person. Our free Christmas gift list printable has columns for budget, bought, wrapped and sent.
- Set a total holiday budget. Include gifts, food, decorations, cards and travel – not just presents.
- Pick your key dates. Parties, school events, travel days and the day you'll host, if you're hosting.
Early November: start shopping and cards
- Buy gifts that need shipping first, and tick them off as they arrive.
- Update your holiday card list with current addresses.
- Check decorations and lights from last year so you know what needs replacing.
Mid to late November: food and hosting
- Plan your holiday menu and write a grocery list for non-perishables you can buy early.
- Decide who brings what if you're hosting a family meal.
- Book any services you need (baking orders, cleaning, pet sitting) before they fill up.
Early December: decorate and wrap
- Decorate over one or two relaxed evenings instead of one long day.
- Wrap gifts as they arrive so nothing piles up on Christmas Eve.
- Send cards and any gifts that need to travel.
The week before Christmas: keep it simple
- Buy fresh food for your menu.
- Do a quick check of your gift list – everything bought, wrapped and sent?
- Leave a few evenings free for traditions and rest.
